Four priests from the Anglican church were allegedly
beaten up on Friday, May 22, by members of the Enugu state task-force on
housing corporation.
The alleged assault took place at the Christ Church, Uwani, Anglican communion, following attempts by the state government to demolish a structure owned by the church.
According to Vanguard, trouble started when members of the church resisted attempts by the task force to carry out a demolition order on the church premises.
The action by the church leaders was said to have angered the members of the task force, who pounced on the clergymen and members of the church with iron, stones and other hard objects. This resulted in several church members sustaining injuries.
The situation would have deteriorated further but for the intervention of Adamu Mohammed, the state commissioner of police, who restrained the task force from carrying out the demolition order.
Mr Mohammed urged the concerned parties to pursue peace. He also asked the church members who may have been injured in the incident to lodge a formal report with the police.
The disputed church premises in question was dedicated by His Grace, the Most Reverend C . J. Patterson, the then ArchBishop of West Africa and Bishop of the Niger in 1965.
However , the state government has revoked the rights of the church to the land with an intention to build an estate.
The Anglican Communion in Enugu state has never had a cordial relationship with Governor Sullivan Chime’s administration
