20 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Kissing

Kissing is a way to show affection that can be a lot of fun, not to mention having been scientifically proven to give couples a greater emotional connection than physical intimacy. There has even been proof that people remember their first kiss far better and more vividly than their first sexual experience. People don’t tend to over-think or dissect things that are such a joyful part of their lives, but here are a few things that you might not know about the best and most satisfying way to express affection.

The Science of Kissing

There is a scientific word for everything under the sun, and that includes kissing. The term for the study of kissing is “philematology”; the scientific term for French kissing is “cataglottism.”

Speaking of Words

The word “kiss” comes from the Old English “cyssan,” which in turn comes from the proto-Germanic “kussijinan” or “kuss.” These words are believed to have come from the sound that kissing makes.

Work It Out

Locking lips is a physical affair, but exactly how physical? The average person burns about 2 calories for every minute of kissing; a passionate make out can burn up to 6 calories a minute.

Literary Evidence

The kiss is a popular subject for poetry and literature across all languages and cultures. The very first mention of the kiss in written word was in the Four Vedic Sanskrit texts, which dates back to 1500 B.C.

Potty Mouth

It’s widely known that the human mouth is an extremely dirty place. With one kiss, persons exchange anywhere from 10 million to 1 billion bacteria. As gross as that sounds, exchanging a kiss with a sick person is less likely to give you a cold than shaking their hand.

Time Of Your Life

Quantifying all of the daily activities really helps to put things into perspective. The average person does enough kissing to fill up two weeks of his or her life.

A Sensitive Subject

The human lips are extremely sensitive, 100 more sensitive than the tips of the fingers. Not even your intimate bits are that sensitive.

When In Rome

The Romans like the Greeks were famous for intellectualizing everything, even the kiss. They divided them into three categories: a kiss on the cheek or “Osculum”, a kiss on the lips or “Basium”, and the deep kiss or “Savolium”.

French Twist

French kissing may be an incredibly fun and delightful experience, but the classic name wasn’t meant to reflect this. The term came about in 1923 as a dig towards the French culture and how so many thought it was so oversexed.

Origin of the Act

So many scholars are unsure as to whether kissing is learned or instinctual. Because there are plenty of cultures around the world that don’t practice kissing, many lean towards the latter.

Cinematic History

You may see a lot of kissing in the movies nowadays, but that wasn’t always the case. Under the censorship of the Hays Code, which was enforced from 1930 to 1968, on-screen kissing was strictly regulated and only allowed to last a few seconds. When kissing, if one person was lying down then the other person had to be standing or sitting upright; if spouses were kissing on the bed (film spouses slept in separate twin beds), one or both of the couple had to have a foot on the floor.

A Violent Affair

Kissing is supposed to be nice, but it can have horrible unexpected consequences. In China, a man kissed his girlfriend so hard that he reduced the pressure in her mouth, which resulted in rupturing her eardrum.

Make Out Physiology

There are a great many facial muscles involved in kissing – a full-on French kiss involves up to 34 muscles. The most important of all though is the orbicularis oris, the muscle that allows the lips to pucker.

Alternative Methods

Although a lot of people say giving “Eskimo” kisses is silly, most wouldn’t admit otherwise. An average of 95% of men and women admit to enjoying rubbing noses every once in a while.

Written Word

You may know that X’s and O’s are the written shorthand for kisses and hugs respectively. What you may not know is that the X is not just a randomly assigned letter – its meant to represent the shape the lips make when they pucker.

Literary Symbolism

Kissing is used as a very powerful metaphor seen throughout art and literature. The two most commonly seen are the kiss of life, also called “The Breath of God”, and the kiss of death, also referred to as “The Judas Kiss”.

You May Kiss The Bride

It would be easy to assume that the husband kisses his new bride at the end of a wedding ceremony as a symbol of love, but that would be assuming incorrectly. In fact, the act can be traced back to ancient Rome where kisses were used to complete and sign personal contracts.

Getting High

When you kiss someone for the first time, the neurotransmitter dopamine is released, a feel-good hormone that makes you crave more. Unfortunately, dopamine can also make you lose your appetite and make it very difficult for you to fall asleep.

Righty-Tighty

When going in for a kiss, about two-thirds of people tilt their heads to the right. German researcher Onur Güntürkün discovered this not by surveying people but by spying on 224 unknowing American, German, and Turkish couples.

Luis Enrique’s side beat the Ligue 1 champions 3-1 in the first leg at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday thanks in large part to a second-half brace from forward Luis Suarez.
That result in the French capital means Barca are now within touching distance of a seventh semi-final appearance in Europe’s premier club competition in the last eight seasons.
However, a late own goal from centre-back Jeremy Mathieu has offered PSG a glimmer of hope, with right-back Dani Alves warning his side against complacency ahead of the return at the Camp Nou.
"We will not speculate with the result because we don't know how to," Alves told the club’s official website.
"The philosophy and the spirit of the team is to challenge for every ball as if it was the last.
"We cannot think about our advantage, but just control the game and look to score from the first minute. That is the only way to overcome PSG."
Luis Suarez celebrates scoring against PSG on Wednesday
PSG, though, will need to become the first team since Bayern Munich nearly two years ago to beat Barcelona by more than one goal at home to progress to what would be a first Champions League semi-final since 1995.
And midfielder Blaise Matuidi has admitted he and his team-mates will have to defend much better than they did in the first leg to stand any chance of causing an upset in Catalonia this week.
"We must above all go without any complex and try everything to achieve what would be an amazing feat,” he said.
"We will be keen to show something different from the first-leg and primarily defend well because that's what we missed at the Parc des Princes."
Team news
Brazil international Alves returns after suspension, while midfielder Andres Iniesta is also expected to feature after overcoming the back bruising he suffered in Paris.
PSG captain Thiago Silva misses out after failing to recover in time from the thigh strain he sustained in the first encounter on Wednesday, while the visitors will also be without injured midfielder Thiago Motta and the banned Serge Aurier.
However, coach Laurent Blanc will have the likes of skipper Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marco Verratti available after both missed the first leg through suspension.
Betting
PSG are 16/1 with Sky Bet to overcome their first-leg deficit and make the Champions League semi-finals, as Barcelona are expected to cruise through.
The La Liga leaders are just 4/11 to progress with another win and4/1 to play out a draw, with Laurent Blanc’s men 13/2 outsiders on the night.
With former favourites Bayern needing to overturn a two-goal deficit, Barca have been installed as the 11/8 favourites to lift the trophy, while PSG are the longest-priced side left in the competition at 150/1.
In the goalscorer betting, Lionel Messi (3/1) is followed by Suarez (4/1), while Ibrahimovic is considered the visitors’ biggest threat at 7/1.
The Soccer Saturday pundits and Jamie Redknapp have made their predictions on www.skybet.com, while there’s also a host of Price Boost available on site.

Boko Haram Attacks Baga, Kills 2

The Boko Haram sect has launched a rocket attack on an army vehicle in the northeast Nigerian town of Baga, killing two soldiers.
Two soldiers lost their lives and six other sustained serious injuries when their vehicle hit a mine implanted by the insurgents just outside the town in Borno state on Sunday, April 20.
The raid and the mine blast occurred as the army accompanied some 1,200 people from Baga on a short return visit to their native town from the Borno state capital, Maiduguri.
Boko Haram capturedthe town on the shores of Lake Chad on January 3 and is supposed of killing hundreds in what was feared to have been the worst massacre in the six-year of terrorism.
Nigeria’s army claimed it had retaken the town in late February, as an operation also involving Chad, Niger and Cameroon stepped up to drive out the insurgents from seized territory.
Karimbe Maina from the area said: “Boko Haram fired a rocket-propelled grenade on a military van in an ambush in Baga which killed two soldiers and destroyed the vehicle.”
The troops were coming back to their base outside Baga to rally more soldiers to help drag an armoured vehicle stuck in the mud across town on the shores of Lake Chad, he continued.
Following the attack which killed two soldiers there was a prolonged gun battle between soldiers and the Boko Haram gunmen, which forced the gunmen to flee, said vigilante Haruna Shuaibu.
The attack interrupted the tour, making the locals to leave their badly damaged and plundered town as quickly as possible, said Musa Bulama who was on the visit.
The visit was firstly planned for Sunday but was temporarily stalled after a military vehicle set off a mine in Kauyen Kuros village, six kilometres (four miles) from Baga.
Bulama said: “We had to spend the night in Kauyen Kuros as a result of the explosion which injured six soldiers and a member of the civilian vigilantes giving security cover to the convoy.‎”
Chris Olukolade, the army spokesperson said on February 21 that troops had to clear landmines planted by Boko Haram before being able to enter Baga.
Nigeria says to have Boko Haram on the run and that troops are supposed to storm the terrorists Sambisa Forest stronghold by the handover of power to the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari on May 29.

2 Lagos Bus Conductors Assault Palm Wine Seller

Two commercial bus conductors have been arrested in Lagos.
The two bus conductors, Wasiu Lawal, 30 and 29-year-old Micheal Judge were on Tuesday docked at an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly damaging a man’s eye. Vanguard reports that the accused who live at Small Kuramo, off Lekki Beach Road, Lagos,  are standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and assault.
The Prosecutor, Sgt Babaji Ishiaku told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 8 at 9.00 p.m. at Small Kuramo, off Lekki Beach Road, Jakande- Lekki. He said the accused allegedly assaulted one Edet Okon, a palm wine seller, by punching him on the eye, causing him partial blindness.
‘The accused had an argument with the palm wine seller which resulted in giving him blows on the face, injuring his eye in the process. The offences contravened Sections 171 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.”
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges. Section 171 provides three years imprisonment for assault, while Section 409 prescribes a two-year jail term for conspiracy. Counsel to the accused, Mrs N. G. Lawani, urged the court to grant him bail on liberal terms. The Magistrate, Mrs L.Y. Balogun, admitted them to a bail of N50, 000 each with one responsible surety each in like sum. She said the addresses of the sureties should be verified and adjourned the case to May 6 for mention.

Okocha, Ronaldo, Zidane In Match Against Poverty
Complete Sports reports that the match included the likes of Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Clarence Seedorf, Fabian Barthez, Gianluca Zambrotta, David Trezeguet, Kurt Zouma and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who curled in an effort as his star-studded side defeated Saint-Etienne 9-7 at the at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on Monday night.
Like many charity friendly matches defending was at a premium, but goals were certainly not as the match at the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium reached double figures.
One of the goals of the game came from the former AC Milan star Clarence Seedorf who earned his name on the score sheet with a sublime chip.
The former French international David Trezeguet also played and scored in the match, but it was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who shone the brightest as he grabbed a hat-trick during his side’s 9-7 defeat.
Okocha was known during his playing days for his flamboyant style of play. He played for Bolton Wanderers and Hull city in the English league, PSG in France, and Galatasary in the Turkish league.
A few weeks ago the Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, hailed the former midfielder, saying he was one of the best players in the Premier League during his time at Bolton Wanderers. The manager also admitted regret at not signing the midfielder.
