An Indian man has been arrested
by the Naswadi police in Gujarat’s tribal-dominated Chhota Udepur
district, for chaining his 19-year-old daughter so as to prevent her
from eloping with her lover, after she refused to go to the family of the man with whom she was married by her relatives.
The
father of the girl, Vasantbhai Rathwa from Simol village, was arrested
and booked him under section 342 of the Indian penal Code (IPC) for
wrongful confinement.
Rathwa's crime against his
daughter came to the fore when it was discovered that he used iron
chains to bound his daughter's legs inside their hut after she was
married off to a man she did not love and she refused to move to the
man's house.
The Naswadi police said that the
girl’s father and relatives had arranged her marriage to a person in
Talsar village not far from their own village and she was actually married off to the man against her wishes because she had a man she loved.
The
girl, however, refused to acknowledge the marriage as she was already
in love with another person and instead stayed back at her father’s
place where she managed to run away with the lover.
The police said it a statement:
"The
girl’s relatives started searching for her and soon found her out from a
nearby village. She was brought back but not let to go out. The girl’s
mother is no more, so her father decided to confine her in such a way
that she does not succeed in again eloping with her lover.
So on Monday, her father locked her legs using an iron chain in such a way that she could not move."
