The United States is set to rekindle her interest in
assisting the Nigerian Military to tackle the Boko Haram insurgents. The
US has promised to send a new team to Nigeria in the coming weeks.The
US has promised to assist Nigeria with all forms of resources from
personnel to advisers and military hardware as well as intelligence to
enable the Nigerian military effectively engage the Boko Haram
insurgents.
It would be recalled that the US Secretary of State John Kerry visited President Muhammadu Buhari just days after he was declared the winner of the March 28 presidential elections.
Kerry was also present at the inauguration of Buhari on May 29 at the Eagle Square Abuja where Buhari in his speech referred to the Boko Haram fighters as “mindless” and “godless”.
The relationship between Nigeria and the US was strained during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan as a result of human rights abuse by the Nigerian Military and a high-leveled corruption in Nigeria’s approach in tackling the insurgents.
PM news reports that the US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, told a congressional hearing. In her words, “We want to work with him (Buhari) and have expressed that to him. With the new government we are optimistic we can reset the relationship”.
She commended Buhari to have publicly and privately shown that he is ready to“do everything possible to address the situation in terms of resources and staff”.

Amnesty reports Boko Haram is responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of Nigerians and have left several millions displaced.
