Tag Heuer, Intel and Googlehave launched a three-way collaboration that will result in potentially the most excitingAndroid Wear device we've seen yet.
Announced at the Baselworld watch show in Switzerland, the smartwatch will be the first wearable device to be created jointly by experts in hardware, software and luxury watch making.
"The quality of Swiss watches is renowned worldwide. When this is allied with the creative technology and global power of two companies like Intel and Google, using the Android Wear platform and based on Intel technology, we can see the launch of a technological revolution in our industry, of which I am proud to be a pioneer today with TAG Heuer," said Tag Heuer general manager Guy Semon.
Intel unveiled its button-sized Curie module designed specifically for wearables at CES in January. Ever since missing the boat with smartphones, the company has been determined to be ahead of the game when it comes to dominating the wearables market. The company is known to be looking into battery technology that could overcome many of the issues with inefficiency that current wearables suffer with.
At an exclusive roundtable event held in November 2014, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich hinted that partnerships with brands such as Tag Heuer were very much on the cards for the company.
"People still wear mechanical watches because these things are fashion statements… we have to tap into that with technology. If we just come at it with technology we'll step back to the seventies," he told WIRED.co.uk. "Our goal is to partner with the people who sell these watches."
Intel is very keen to demonstrate what its platforms are capable of and has the intention of providing the back-end technology that will make it possible for any fashion brand to add intelligence to their products. The company also has a partnership with Fossil, a major watchmaker that creates timepieces for a wide range of high-end fashion designers, as well as under its own brand.
The most surprising element of the Tag Heuer collaboration is perhaps Google's involvement. Android Wear obviously requires a digital screen, and it's not quite clear yet how this will be combined with Tag Heuer's analogue, mechanical heritage. The trio can generally be trusted to deliver exciting products individually, but let's hope it's not a case of too many cooks here. Nevertheless, it's exciting to see luxury watch brands embrace technology, and this is the perfect time to make a statement given the upcoming Apple Watchlaunch.
There's no information yet about what the watch will look like or when there might be more news, but you can expect that development is already well underway.
