According to The Nation, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Mu'azu is expected to be replaced by an outgoing governor of the South-south region of the country.
The ‘Mu’azu must- go’ campaign has gained momentum after the party’s abysmal outing in the just concluded general elections.
As the plot to unseat him thickens, he has been blamed for the inability of the party to do well in the north in particular and the nation in general in the elections.
Arising from a meeting in Abuja that x-rayed the party’s performance in each of the six Geo-political zones, chieftains of the party including governors in the South-south and Southeast now see the two zones as the new power base of the party.
According to PDP sources, the meeting was characterized by accusations and counter accusations of disloyalty, betrayal and anti-party activities among chieftains, especially in the northern zones.
One of the South-south governors openly blamed PDP’s loss at the federal level on what he described as indiscipline and disloyalty by some party members.
The governor who warned that dire consequences await any member found to be involved in anti-party activities, emphasized the importance of party discipline and loyalty towards achieving success in any political contest.
A defeated Senatorial candidate of the party said: “From proceeding at the meeting, it was obvious that the party urgently needs a new direction. For this to happen, we must get new leadership immediately. And there is no pretending that the leadership can no longer remain in the north following its woeful performance in that region.
“We cannot be led by people whose commitment to the party is now questionable. Those who have stakes in the party must take charge and rescue the party at this crucial stage. This is the idea behind the resolve to bring the chairmanship back to the south. But I am not aware that a particular name is mentioned to occupy the seat,” he added
Other prominent party leaders who are in support of Mu 'azu’s replacement include Senator Pius Anyim and Chief E.K. It is said that the replacement of Muazu with a respected South-south governor could occur on or before May 29.
Meanwhile, former national chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur has blamed the loss of the party in the general elections on failure on the part of the leadership to listen to his warning about the looming defeat.
Speaking in Abuja on April 24, the ex-national chairman of the party said that he had warned the party in 2013 that it would suffer defeat in the 2015 general election if the leaders refused to change their ways and allow for internal democracy within the party.
