88'GoalJavier 'Chicharito' Hernandez
GOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL FOR REAL MADRID! LOS BLANCOS MAY HAVE JUST STOLE THIS!!! James cleverly finds Ronaldo inside the box and the Portuguese stabs a pass into the path of Hernandez, who smuggles a strike into the empty net! One-nil The Santiago Bernabeu EXPLODES! -
86'SubstitutionTiago J. Giménez
- 86'Ronaldo slides a pass into the channel just inside the box and Isco just latches on to it before going down under the challenge of Juanfran. The referee takes a quick look at it but decides there wasn't really enough contact- that one probably could have went either way! Inconclusive!
- 84'Third and final change of the match now and it will see defender, Jose Gimenez, come on to replace midfielder, Tiago. Should be interesting to see how Simeone shapes up his side now, as they now have three central defenders on the pitch.
- 82'As expected, basically every single Atletico player is behind the ball here as they look to consolidate their place in extra time. However, Madrid are looking dangerous in the latter stages here so it might not come to that. As I mentioned before, Los Colchoneros are the best at defending a lead, or in this case, a draw.
- 80'HERNANDEZ MISSES BY A WHISKER! The Mexican once again manages to get in behind the Atletico defence and lashes a strike towards the bottom right corner. ONCE AGAIN Oblak is on hand to turn the ball round the post! Sensational performance over these two legs from the Slovenian!
- 78'Where do Atletico Madrid go from here? They weren't exactly going gung-ho in their attacking before the sending off, so this will probably signal a 'park the bus' method before the end of the 90 minutes. Expect attack versus defence for the remaining period of this match.
- 76'Yellow/RedArda Turan
ARDA TURAN IS SENT OFF! Sergio Ramos clears the ball for Real Madrid and the Turk comes in with his foot raised high to catch the current Los Blancos midfielder! Looked a bit harsh, but a silly challenge if you are on a booking! - 74'Yellow CardRaúl García
- 74'Yellow CardPepe
- 74'Raul Garcia receives a yellow, and Pepe gets a booking for his protests about the aforementioned foul on Varane.
- 73'There is a small break in play at the moment as Varane is currently down after catching a loose volley to the stomach from Raul Garcia. Unclear as to how much intent there was in it, but knowing the Atletico midfielder and his history, he probably attempted to leave something on the Frenchman there.
- 71'As time goes on here, it is likely that we will see a much more tense approach by both sides. Atletico know that a Madrid goal will see them gain plenty of confidence, but the home side are reluctant to press too much in fear of conceding an away goal. Game so delicately poised at 0-0.
- 69'The game is getting a little more stretched now thanks to a couple of excellent pieces of distribution from the opposing goalkeepers. To be fair to both teams, they have managed to speedily get back into defensive positions whenever the other team counterattack. It has been a major factor as to why we haven't seen a goal so far.
- 67'Ronaldo latches on to a loose ball on the edge of the box and snatches at a shot which bounces wide of the left-hand post. More worryingly so for Los Blancos, he just grabs a hold of his hamstring after the strike, but it looks like he should be okay to run it off.
- 65'SubstitutionAntoine Griezmann Raúl García
- 65'Another change coming from Atletico Madrid now and it sees Griezmann coming off to be replaced by Raul Garcia. The Frenchman doesn't look to enamoured with coming off, but he has worked his socks off down that left-hand side. Will they miss his ability to pop up with a goal though? Brave from Simeone.
- 63'Ronaldo pops up down the left wing this time and swings a cross into the box near the penalty spot. Sergio Ramos commandingly out-jumps everyone to bullet a header towards goal, but it is straight down the throat of Oblak who makes the grateful save. Either side of the keeper and that is a definite goal!
- 61'A couple of corner kicks are consecutively curled into the box and Real Madrid are eventually let off the hook as Godin is penalised for a foul on Pepe at the back post. They were both at it really but the defender generally gets the benefit of the doubt it these situations.
- 59'A teasing cross is whipped into the Real Madrid box and Casillas looks poised to claim, but Varane gets in front of his own goalkeeper to glance behind for a corner kick. Atletico get a set-piece almost for nothing, and they will fancy their chances from it. Let's see if they can make anything.
- 57'Madrid have bossed this game in the opening few minutes of this second half, with Atletico struggling to get out of their defensive areas. Mandzukic and Griezmann are typically working hard, but Atletico are going to have to be an attacking force at some point in the final third - unless we get to penalties...
- 55'Coentrao clips a pass down the left wing and Ronaldo brilliantly flicks it into the path of Isco. The former Malaga midfielder opens up his stride through the middle and looks to release Hernandez, but Miranda is on hand to make the interception.
- 53'The thing is with Atletico Madrid is that there is probably no team better in the world that weathering the attacking storm of another team when they are under the cosh. Each individual knows their job, which enables them to defuse situations with relative ease - and it looks like they've did that here.
- 51'This early barrage of possession and that chance for Hernandez seems to have catalysed the home crowd into some loud singing here! They know their team is in the ascendancy, but they need to take advantages of these little periods before Atletico manage to kill the tempo!
- 49'CHICHARITO! HOW CLOSE WAS THAT! Isco threads a quite delightful pass in behind the Atletico defence and the on-loan Manchester United striker turns sharply and in the one motion swings a left-footed strike at goal! It goes just a yard wide, and he knows he should have did better! A chance goes begging for Los Blancos!
- 47'Hernandez makes a penetrating run down the left-hand side and battles valiantly against Miranda before eventually being out-muscled by the Brazilian, who is forced to put the ball out for a throw-in. The Mexican receives a round of applause for his efforts.
- 46'We are back under way at Santiago Bernabeu, and there is a half time change to report. Simeone has opted to introduce club captain, Gabi, in place of Saul Niguez, who was ineffectual in the first period.
- Half time at Santiago Bernabeu on the stroke of 45 minutes. Still no breakthrough in this Madrid derby quarter-final second leg of the Champions League as we head into a break at a 0-0 stalemate. A typically, and predictably tight game has occurred up to this point, so it may be a solitary goal that settles this one. Otherwise we are looking at extra time!
- 43'VITAL SAVE FROM OBLAK!!! Mandzukic allows himself to be robbed of the ball in a dangerous position and Isco promptly slides a pass through to Ronaldo. The Portuguese only has the keeper to beat but is thwarted again by the Atletico goalkeeper, who continues to keep his side in this tie!
- 41'Pepe almost pulls off a wonderful pass as he whips a wicked cross to the back post which completely splits Godin and Miranda. Hernandez attempts to get on the end of it but just can't manage to stretch a leg out to claim possession. He does, however, reclaim the ball near the corner flag.
- 39'Koke floats a deep free kick to the back post and the ball actually bounces off the back of Sergio Ramos before drifting to the bottom corner. Casillas is alert to it though and manages to save his compatriot any embarrassment by getting down to make the block comfortably.
- 37'The Madrid fans are up in arms near the corner flag as Hernandez cleverly flicks the ball past Miranda, only to be cynically blocked off by the Brazilian defender. Probably would have been a harsh booking, but it doesn't stop the Madrid players surrounding the referee demanding one.
- 35'You would have been hard pressed to predict anything other than what has transpired so far. The match is just so tightly contested in the middle of the park that any creativity is being squeezed out. As well as Benzema's selfless running, Madrid are also desperately missing the width usually provided by the pacey Marcelo. Coentrao doesn't quite provide the same impetus down that left wing.
- 33'SAVE FROM OBLAK! Ronaldo does indeed take charge of the next free kick and fizzes a long range 35-yard strike towards the bottom corner, but the goalkeeper manages to stretch out a hand to turn the attempt away! The Slovenian called into action for the first time tonight!
- 32'First booking of the match now and it deservedly goes to Arda for hacking down Kroos as the German just drifts by him. The Turk will be walking on egg shells for the rest of the match now. Not an easy game to keep your head clear for an hour!
- 31'Yellow CardArda Turan
- 31'James manages to get in between the lines down the right channel and digs out a teasing cross to the back post. Hernandez, in turn, drifts in between the Atletico central defenders to squeeze out a header, but it just deflects over the bar for a corner kick. That close attempt fires up the home crowd, and Chicharito himself!
- 29'Jesus Gamez gets into an advanced area in the middle of the park and takes a heavy touch before just managing to get a shot away. It is a decent strike from the right-back, but Casillas gets across goal to get his body behind the ball and make the save.
- 27'James Rodriguez steps up and manages to get his free kick over the wall with some zip, but it just doesn't dip in time and Oblak comfortably sees the attempt over the crossbar. You get the feeling that Ronaldo will probably pull rank and take charge of the next set-piece near the Atletico goal.
- 26'Real Madrid get a free kick in Ronaldo territory after the Portuguese is rather cynically blocked off by Gamez. It is just to the right-hand side though, so will it be the former Manchester United man, or James, who will be tasked with the set-piece?
- 25'Actually, it seems that both sets of strikers are struggling to get any kind of real service. We have seen a few glimpses from Griezmann, but the attackers have been frustrated for the most part due to the sheer lack of space in the respective final thirds.
- 23'A lot of the pre-match talk tonight was focused on the missing Real Madrid trio of Bale, Benzema, and Modric, and it has to be said that it is the Frenchman who is being missed most so far. Los Blancos are desperately missing his link-up play and runs into the channels to create space for Ronaldo to operate.
- 21'That is a sore one for Jesus Gamez as the former Malaga full-back takes a shoulder straight to the face from Ronaldo in the middle of an aerial battle. Didn't look to be too much intent, and the Atletico man looks to be okay anyway.
- 19'Just about approaching the 20-minute mark in this quarter-final second leg clash and the formula has mostly remained the same from the first leg. Plenty of battling in midfield, but not too much in terms of goalscoring chances as of yet. Remember, only another 0-0 scoreline can take us to extra time tonight.
- 17'Madrid sweep the ball around fairly nicely in the final third and possession eventually comes to Coentrao, who swings a teasing cross into the box. Sergio Ramos fancies getting on the end of it but he takes out Godin in the process and Atletico get the free kick, much to the frustration of the Santiago Bernabeu crowd.
- 15'Pepe gives us the first glimpse of his famous red mist as he attempts to go right through the side of Arda down the left wing. In the end he clears the ball fairly cleanly, but if the Turk was a yard further forward he would have been completely clattered. One for the ref to keep an eye on.
- 13'RONALDOOOOOO!!! UNLUCKY! The Ballon d'Or winner latches on to a mistake in the middle of the park from Atletico and takes a stride forward before lashing a left-footed strike towards the bottom right corner. Not the best connection though and the attempt is flashed wide. Just a warning sign to Atletico, though!
- 12'That is poor from Javier Hernandez. The Mexican initially does brilliantly to drift in behind the Atletico defence and, with no other real options available, decides to have a crack at goal. However, the eventual strike is slammed well wide into the side-netting, and he quickly offers an apology to his team-mates.
- 10'Ronaldo attempts to get his first meaningful shot of the match away as he bursts forward down the right channel before looking to pull the trigger. In the end the strike is commandingly blocked by Arda, who makes up an incredibly amount of ground from the opposite wing to get back and help out his defence.
- 8'Jesus Gamez receives the ball to left-back and swings a speculative pass down the left wing for Griezmann, which Varane comfortably sweeps up before laying back to Casillas. It should be a very entertaining duel between the two compatriots tonight - plenty of pace on show!
- 7'Madrid have enjoyed the majority of the possession in the opening stages with Kroos in particular having control of the ball in the central midfield area. The danger players such as Isco, James, Ronaldo, and Hernandez are yet to get a sniff, though.
- 5'And here we go folks, it has only took five minutes for a player to go down to the ground writhing in agony clutching their face after a small collision off the ball. It is Sergio Ramos involved again, who sheepishly gets to his feet as the referee fails to punish Saul for the infringement. Expect more play acting tonight, unfortunately.
- 3'Speaking of Ramos, the Madrid vice-captain gets himself into a potentially sticky situation facing his own goal in the middle of the park, but implements an extremely powerful shield of the ball in midfield to shake off the attentions of Arda. That should be a promising sign for Madrid and for Carlo Ancelotti.
- 2'Now, before the match started, there was some speculation as to whether it would be Sergio Ramos or Pepe playing in the centre of midfield alongside Kroos. Upon viewing the first couple of minutes it appears that the Spaniard has been deployed there.
- 1'We are under way in the Madrid derby- a place in the semi-final of the Champions League is up for grabs!
- The players have made their way to the pitch and what a fantastic atmosphere we have at Santiago Bernabeu! This could be a special one tonight, folks!
- Diego Simeone makes just two changes from the previous match, which was a narrow 2-1 win over Deportivo. Jose Gimenez and Raul Garcia are withdrawn for Miranda and Mario Mandzukic, who will no doubt be employing high-physicality tactics up top alongside Antoine Griezmann.
- Some definite tinkering from Ancelotti for this match tonight due to three forced absences. With Marcelo suspended and Bale, Benzema, and Modric injured, Coentrao will be coming in at left-back, Sergio Ramos will move into the midfield three, Varane will slot in at the back, and Javier Hernandez will be given a rare start up top.
- Atletico Madrid (4-4-2): Oblak; Juanfran, Miranda, Godin, Jesus Gamez; Tiago, Koke, Arda, Saul; Mandzukic, Griezmann.
- Real Madrid (4-3-3): Casillas; Carvajal, Varane, Pepe, Coentrao; Sergio Ramos, Kroos, James, Isco; Ronaldo, Hernandez.
- TEAM NEWS...
- In terms of European form against teams from their own nation, something is going to have to give tonight. The Blancos have lost only one of their last eight games against a Spanish team in European competitions. Meanwhile, Atletico have lost only one of their last ten games against Spanish sides in Europe, but that defeat came precisely against Real Madrid in the 2014 final.
- Both sides are coming of respective Spanish Primera Division victories from the weekend. Atletico came out 2-1 winners over Deportivo and Real Madrid successfully defeated Malaga 3-1, but that victory was marred due to the aforementioned injuries to Modric and Bale.
- This season, Real Madrid are aiming to become the first side in history to defend the Champions League after last season's triumph. However, with injuries to Luka Modric, Karim Benzema, and Gareth Bale ruling the trio out of the match tonight, and with their recent form against Atletico, is the hand stacked against Los Blancos?
- Including that final, however, Atletico have not lost any of their last seven Madrid derbies in all competitions after 90 minutes; their best ever such run. That includes six matches already this season, so can Carlo Ancelotti and Real Madrid stop the rot?
- For Atletico Madrid and coach Diego Simeone, the wounds from last year's Champions League final against their arch rivals are still very much fresh, and revenge is still on the cards as they aim to progress to the semi-final this campaign. Last year, Los Colchoneros were a mere few seconds away from being crowned champions, but a dramatic equaliser from Sergio Ramos saw Real Madrid keep the game alive and subsequently win in extra time.
- There is all to play for in the Spanish capital tonight as the city rivals move into the second leg fresh from their 0-0 stalemate at the Vicente Calderon last Tuesday. It was a typically feisty first leg affair just over a week ago, with a entertaining duel between Mario Mandzukic and the Real Madrid defenders proving to be the story of the evening. However, no goals means that we head into the second leg with the tie tensely poised.
- I'm Martin Macdonald, and I'll be taking you through all the action!
