Chukwuma Bamidele reportedly had been battling with respiratory ailment for years. It was learnt that Nnamdi Azikiwe’s son spent his last days at Borromeo Hospital in the commercial city of Onitsha.
Nigerians expressed their condolences using different social networks. naij.com collected peoples’ reactions to this sad news:
“Nigeria has lost a fine and well refined diplomat, a quiet and unassuming leader who represented this nation at many levels. May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace with the Lord. Amen,” said Samuel Aje, naij.com follower.
“Farewell Chuma, the Owelle original. Rest in peace from your earthly troubles. May God look kindly upon your soul & grant you divine peace,” said another naij.com reader, Christopher Mbonu.
Prashant Sankhe said: “God give enough strength to his family to bear such loss and give peace to departed soul.”
“The true hero to remember,” Olaide Raji paid his tribute to Chukwuma Bamidele.
“In a sane world he would be given a befitting and national burial due to the impact of his father in our democracy but our government doesn’t give a spoon about national heroes,” said another Nairaland user, naijainfogalery.
However, some of Nairaland users are more concerned with the origin of the diseased’s name than with anything else.
“Please who can explain why there is Bamidele in his name? Is his mother Yoruba?” asked user babyfaceafrica.
“Part of it’s affinity for the Yoruba’s in his political group of NCNC then. People like Adeniran Ogunsanya and co who was his top lieutenant then. He was really a detribalized man. RIP to his son,” user Lucasbalo answered.
While user bigfrancis21 has the following opinion: “Nnamdi Azikiwe was a strong believer in one Nigeria such that he spoke all 3 Nigerian languages and gave his first son a Yoruba middle name to solidify his belief in one Nigeria. However, I doubt if Chukwuma himself gave his own kids yoruba names.”
Nevertheless, there were people who decided to underline that Azikiwe’s son isn’t the only one who died that day and there is no need to pay him any tribute.
Chukwuma ascended his late father’s traditional throne as the Owelle of Onitsha following the demise of the elderstatesman in 1995.
