Nigeria Premier League outfit, Sunshine Stars have expressed their displeasure with the ban of referees John Charles and Ogunta Matador by the League Management Company.
The duo were banned for the rest of the Nigeria Premier League season by the referees’ committee owing to claims that they handled the Week 4 NPFL game between Sunshine Stars and Dolphins badly.
Speaking through their media officer, Wahab Bankole, Sunshine feel the league body was too harsh in their judgment while refuting claims that the officials aided their win against the Port Harcourt based side.
“It was unfortunate that the referees were punished unjustly because I can tell you that the officials were neither bias nor supporting Sunshine Stars,” Bankole told Goal.
“The errors committed by the centre referee shows he is human and these blunders are usually committed by topflight referees in Europe and other parts of the western world.
“I think the league organizers have gone too far as it concerns sanctioning these men. Most times football referees don’t get to see a clearly picture of what is happening on the field of play because of their positioning. It is sad that in Nigeria, we are fond of making a hill out of nothing.”
He also appealed that the league organizers should reduce their sanctions will disclosing that the Akure based outfit would not in any way seek for clemency for the referees.
“I will like to use this medium to say the match officials in any way never supported Sunshine Stars. For doubters, they can watch the replay.
“The LMC and the referee committee should look back and see how they would reduce the punishments meted out on the referees, mind you, our management will not be involved in pleading on their behalf,” he concluded.
