UNIVERSITY OF UYO, UYO
(Office
of the Registrar)
UU\REG\DAA\159\Vol.29\73
To: All students’
All
members of the university community
The University
Management has directed the suspension until further notice , the on-going
processes which was to culminate in the 2014\2015 session Students’ Union Elections.
The reason
of the suspension, is based on the fact that the admosphere is not conducive
for elections, as some issues have been raised by students’ of the Faculty of Engineering
vide a letter dated 22nd April 2015 and signed by 136 students’ of
the Faculty. All issues raised by the students have to be investigated to avoid
any wrong interpretation.
Management
has consequently decided the on-going processes be suspended to allow proper
investigation into the issues raised by these students and for appropriate
action to be taken.
The Vice-Chancellor
on behalf of Management has therefore appeal to all parties concerned to remain
calm until issues raised are appropriately addressed. All students’ are also
advised to go about their usual routines peacefully and resist any form of
temptation to engage in act that may lead to a breakdown of law and order.
Students are particularly advised to maintain the peace in campus.
Thank you
for your usual co-operation.

Madam,
PETITION AGAINST THE
IRREGULARITIES IN THE SCREENING OF THE FACULTY OF ENGINEERING STUDENTS BY THE
STUDENTS’ UNION GOVERNMENT ELECTORAL COMMISSION
In lieu of
the earlier peaceful demonstration carried out by the students of the University’s
Main Campus today, 22nd April, 2015, we hereby state our
grievances as follows:
I.
Undue
and inappropriate disqualification of our aspirants at the Students’ Union
Government elections.
Sequel to
the 2013\2014 SUG elections, the Presidential candidate from Faculty of Engineering
(UDOFIA, ISAAC) was screened out just on the basis of security reasons which
at this time remains undisclosed to the Nigerian students.
Also, the
same irregularity has taken place again as the Presidential and Director of Socials
aspirants from faculty of engineering were screened out of the 2014\2015
session Students’ Union Government elections on the same vague and unexplained
basis of security reasons.
II.
Over
the years, the students of the Faculty of Engineering have been disfranchised
by issuing of less number of ballot papers to the faculty’s polling unit during
SUG elections; this has gravely limited the number of voters participating in
the election from the faculty.
Furthermore,
in support of the issues above, the faculty of engineering has a voting
strength of 3000 students, yet less than 500 ballot papers are usually released
to the faculty.
III.
In
addition, over the years, the students of the Faculty of Engineering have not
been treated and addressed respectfully as students of this institution, we are
either tagged as Cultists or Hoodlums, thereby supporting the
actions of always sending in security dogs and non-students’ friendly law
enforcement agents to the faculty during Students’ Union Government elections,
which is not the case of other faculties and campuses of this institution.
Again, for
the records, let it be known that there has never been any case of rape,
snatching of phones and laptops at any time of the day on the main campus where
we have the engineering students’ as it is the case at the Town and Annex Campuses;
yet, we are tagged and branded as CULTIST-
as case of defamation of
character\character assassination.
Madam,
whereas we have stated the points above, we therefore seek a vivid explanation
as to why our candidates have been unduly and wrongly screened and an
explanation of the said “security
reasons” used against our aspirants.
For the
records madam, for two (2) consecutive convocation ceremonies, the faculty of
engineering has consistently produced the overall best graduating students in
the university, and yet we are branded as cultist; the question here is why?
At this
point madam, we want to say that the management should respond to these issues
before 5PM TODAY DATED WEDNESDAY, 22nd
APRIL 2015 as promised by you considering the following:
v The reinstate the Faculty of Engineering’s
aspirants to stand elections in the forth-coming Students’ Union Government elections.
v To promise and put into action that
the polling unit at the Faculty of Engineering will not have less than 3000
ballot papers for the forth-coming SUG elections.
v Withdrawal of external security
agents and security dogs from the Faculty of Engineering polling unit during
the Students’ Union Government elections, except it is so done on other faculty
of the university.
We look
forward to your respond as soon as possible.
Thank you!
Yours
faithfully,
Signed:
