Nigerian Students Abroad Suffer As Governor Amaechi "Stopped Caring"

Have the recent political events that affected Rivers state influenced the incumbent Governor Chibuike Amaechi’s determination to help and support Nigerian students abroad? Naij.com editorial team has been contacted by students from Rivers state who were sent to study abroad but are not receiving their stipends and struggling to get by.

Preshi Amaewhule, who alerted us, is a native of Rivers state. He is currently studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Debrecen.
“I am crying, desperate and ragged,” he writes in his Facebook message to naij. “I am a beneficiary of the Rivers state governorship overseas scholarship which is been handled by an agency called RSSDA (Rivers state sustainable development agency).
“The state government sent me to Hungary, just as so many of us were sent to study all over the world in various universities. I am studying at the University of Debrecen.
“To cut this long story short, we have not been paid our stipends for the past seven months, and still counting. All our attempts to get the governor to our aid have proven to be abortive. In fact, with the political crisis in my state, I don’t see us getting paid soon because our governor, His Excellency Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, does not look interested in our welfare anymore.
“All I am asking is for you to share this so that we may be able to continue with our studies here and not get deported. I am just one of many students suffering and languishing, with no hope for food, clothing or accommodation fees, plus we have to pay bills tomorrow. Help me and other students pass the information around.”
Below is the appeal the group has sent to Rivers state authorities in an attempt to draw attention to the issue — the attempt that is yet to yield results, according to Mr Amaewhule.
