At least 21 people reportedly died over the weekend following accidents in Enugu and on the Akure-Ilesa expressway.
Leadership reports that the accident on the Akure-Ilesa expressway occurred on Sunday with 14 dead while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
It was learnt that that the passengers died in the head-on collision between two vehicles. One said to be coming from Akure while the other was coming from Ilesa.
According to the spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for South-West, Ibrahim Farinloye, the vehicles collided at Ayo Babalola Seminary in Osun State area, leading to the death of 14 passengers on board both vehicles.
The spokesman said: “The road crash involved two vehicles – one coming from Akure and other one coming from Ilesa.
“The vehicle coming from Akure with a wedding train had five people dead while the other one coming from Ilesa, going to Akure had nine people dead on the spot. The total number of casualties from the crash are 14 death on the spot.”
Meanwhile the accident in Enugu which was confirmed by the Enugu State Police Command claimed at least seven lives in an accident that occurred along Oji River Onitsha road at the weekend.
A statement made available to leadership in Enugu by the comman’s Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu confirmed the sad development.
According to Ebere, the accident involved a tipper with registration number NKE 121 XA and a commercial bus with registration number JRV 245 XA.
He disclosed that the accident occurred when the two vehicles collided, adding that occupants of the buses were unconscious when the accident happened .
“They were, however, rushed to Amaku Teaching Hospital, Awka, for medical attention where three male and four female passengers were confirmed dead, and others in critical condition “
According to him, both the bus driver and tipper driver are receiving treatment at the teaching hospital where the dead passengers have been deposited at the hospital mortuary by the traffic operatives of Oji River Division of the Nigeria police Enugu command.
In a related development, Farinloye who confirmed the accident in Akure also announced that a candle-light fire accident resulted in the burning to death of a six-month-old baby boy, at House 52, CA Street, Shagari Estate, Mosan Okunola, Ipaja area of Lagos
