A bricklayer identified as Tunde at the weekend was killed while other workers were said to have sustained varied degrees of injuries when a building they were working on collapsed in the Bariga area of Lagos.
It was gathered that the building located on Gbagada Road was being demolished for reconstruction when it suddenly caved in on the workers.
The owner of the building, Pastor Nwosu was said to have taken three workers to the site for renovation.
A part of the building was said to have gave in just when the work started. One of the workers identified as Mufutau was trapped in the building.
An eyewitness said police men attached to the Bariga Division came to the scene and removed the corpse.
“The owner of the collapsed building is a pastor. He also owns the church besides the building.
“He brought the workers to demolish the structure so that it can be rebuilt. While the men set to work, the walls just came down on them.
“While people rescued Mufutau, they did not realise that another person was trapped in the rubble.
“It was later that they heard sharp screams and suspected that someone was still trapped. It was the police, who brought him out and took his corpse away,” the eyewitness noted.
Tunde was however pronounced dead on getting to the hospital.
While confirming the tragic incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu said, “It is a case of sudden and unnatural death. The pastor reported at a police station that he employed three casual workers to renovate a part of his building. However, a wall caved in and collapsed on two of them. One of them died.”
Nwosu also stated that the corpse has been removed and deposited in a mortuary.
